Adult Counselling

I am experienced in working with adults on a wide range of counselling issues, such as anger concerns, work and relationship worries, depression, anxiety, infertility and abuse. I offer one to one counselling sessions in a safe and confidential environment.

I provide counselling that is based on providing three core conditions for you. These are, empathy (the ability to imagine myself in your position), unconditional positive regard (providing warm and positive feelings towards you) and congruence (being open and honest).
The approach to my therapeutic work is based on the simple premise, that when we feel isolated, angry, guilty, hopeless or lost, we become disconnected, not only from ourselves but from those close to us.

As I practice from an integrative approach, I use client centred work, sometimes known as talking therapy. I also draw on other techniques such as Cognitive behaviour therapy, Mindfulness, Inner Child work, Relaxation exercises and Hypnotherapy.

The amount of sessions you attend is based on your decision. Sometimes, one session is all you may need. The chance to explain a problem or issue that is causing you concern may make it appear clearer, and the opportunity to talk may help relieve your anxiety and distress.
Through the counselling process, my aim is to offer you ways to find a positive way forward and to help you cope with these life challenges. I can also help you to find more effective coping mechanisms and build your emotional resilience.

Anger Management

If you frequently experience anger, you already know that it can make you feel out of control. You may also have realised that your anger often ends up hurting you just as it hurts those who are on the receiving end of your anger. Over time, excessive anger is likely to destroy important personal and work relationships, damage physical, emotional and mental health and could possibly culminate in encountering the police, court and prison system. While your anger may usually be directed at others, you are also the victim of its destructiveness.

Anger management is about understanding your anger and why it happens. It is about learning and practising better ways of expressing anger, and knowing how to prevent it from occurring in the first place. Specifically, anger management is about knowing the triggers and early warning signs of anger, and learning techniques to calm down and manage the situation before it gets out of control. Learning how to manage anger starts with acknowledging its existence and understanding its causes.

Through therapy I can help you discover the root cause of your anger, identify the triggers, and learn how to manage your anger in a way that doesn’t hurt you or those around you. I provide a safe and confidential counselling environment where you can express your feelings without guilt or shame. Together we can explore the cause of your anger and develop strategies that will enable you to manage it, including communicating your feelings in a non-threatening manner.

Children and young people's counselling

Perhaps you have recognised that your child is struggling with painful events like family breakdown, loss or bereavement or that they are finding experiences at school (transition or exams) or sibling/peer relationships overwhelming.

Counselling is a safe and non-judgemental space for the child or young person to make sense of what’s happening and discover how to find answers or ways of coping with whatever is troubling them.

As children usually express their distress in different ways than adults, when I counsel children, it is vital that I understand their non-verbal as well as their verbal communication. I can then analyse how to make sense of the child's inner world through symbolic communication.

So when working with children, I use a range of play, sandplay and creative media to help a child make sense of and resolve their difficulties. The therapy room is always set out differently when working with children and young people, as sometimes, sitting on a chair is not always effective.

Hypnotherapy and NLP

Clinical Hypnotherapy means using hypnosis to treat a variety of medical and it may even succeed where other, more conventional methods of treatment have not produced the desired results. When carried out by a professionally trained and skilled hypnotherapist, the benefits can be long lasting and often permanent. It is completely natural and safe, with no harmful side effects.

The actual experience of being hypnotised is very difficult to describe, neither asleep nor awake. All hypnotic states are characterised by a tremendously pleasant state of relaxation, an altered state of consciousness into which individuals allow themselves to enter so that the desired, beneficial suggestions may be given directly to the unconscious mind. Thus, hypnosis is a natural, effective way of making contact with the inner (unconscious) self, a tremendous reservoir of unrecognised potential strength and knowledge.

Hypnotherapy is a form of focused attention similar to day dreaming by using your imagination while in deep relaxation and a safe supportive environment. Hypnosis has a profound effect on the body and the mind. Through Hypnosis, I can help you master and unproductive thoughts and feelings, by replacing them with positive or more manageable thoughts, feelings and reactions.

Under hypnosis you will not be asleep; you have to be in control to be in the ‘here and now’. You will be aware at all times of my voice and your surroundings. After hypnotherapy sessions, clients have reported feelings of calmness and being deeply relaxed, both physically and emotionally.

NLP - Neuro Linguistic Programming

NLP identifies the thinking patterns that get in your way, and offers ways to change your thinking, that changes your life. NLP presupposes that your way of seeing things is unique and useful to you, or was useful in some context. These presuppositions determine our feelings and our ideas about what we can and cannot do. Our self-confidence and thereby our actions and our quality of life all depend on how we use our mind, either consciously or unconsciously.

Using Hypnotherapy and NLP, I can enable you to realise how your thought processes have influenced your actions and therefore to help you to change your automatic thoughts and to learn new effective behaviours.
